Species information.

Greylag Geese (Ansar Común / Anser anser).

Very rare just one small flock seen flying along the Rio Genil in area 2. There is a small feral population of farm yard type geese on the Genil at Huétor Tajar which contains a few Greylag looking birds.

Barnical Goose (Barnacla Cariblanca / Branta leucopsis).

Only recorded once as an escape in area 2 at the bridge over the Rio Genil at Huétor Tajar.

Egyptian Geese (Ganso del Nilo / Alopochen aegyptiaca).

Uncommon but can be found on the Contra-embalse de Bermijalis occasionally in area 6, two birds were also on the fields near Huétor Tajar in area 2. Out of the area they are being counted as a problem species.

Mallard (Anade Azulón / Anas platyrhynchos).

Can be found on any area of water in the whole area, even at 1400m in Sierra Gordo. A common breeding species which shows no real jump in numbers during the winter.

Uncommon Winter visitor to areas 3, 6 and 9. Never seen in any sort of numbers, just the odd singleton or pair.

Northern Pintail (Ánade Rabudo / Anas acuta).

Another uncommon winter visitor which shows up now and then on pools in areas 3, 6 and 9.

Northern Shoveler (Pato Cuchara / Anas clypeata).

Common Winter visitor, odd birds seen in the summer at Contra-embalse de Bermjalis in area 6 and at a pool in area 2. The species is much more common during winter at these sites and others.

Eurasian Wigeon (Sibón Europeo / Anas penelope).

Uncommon winter visitor with just the odd birds at Balsa de Rigedor in area 3 plus at other sites in areas 6 and 9. A single female was seen on the Rio Genil at Mesia in area 2.

An uncommon passage bird, best flock seen was of 21 male birds in area 6.

Eurasian Teal (Cerceta Común / Anas crecca).

 Fairly common winter visitor in areas 3, 6 and 9. Flocks of a dozen or so birds on the Contra-Embalse de Bermejalis are quite regular but just odd birds else where.

Common Pochard (Porrón Común / Aythya ferina).

Fairly Common breeding resident in area 3, 6, 7 and 9. The winter flock on the Contra-Embalse de Bermejalis can reach over 100 in a good year.

Uncommon Winter visitor in areas 3, 6 and 9. Single birds are quite regularly on Contra-embalse de Bermejalis.

Tufted Duck (Porrón Monudo / Aythya fuligula).

Uncommon Winter visitor in areas 3, 6 and 9. As with all the more uncommon duck species Tufteds are usually only seen as singletons.
